AANMC 2-Minute E-News:
Naturopathic updates for the unnaturally busy student
UBCNM Increases Efforts
in Integrated Medical Care
The University of Bridgeport School of Naturopathic Medicine is one of the AANMC schools you’ll see expanding its efforts in support of a comprehensive approach to medical care, in both the Northeast and in the naturopathic medical community at large.
ND students experience acute-care environment
Locally, UBCNM has partnered with St. Vincent’s Medical Center to allow UBCNM students to join physicians, residents and medical students on observation rotations and case presentations during daily grand rounds. These educational rotations “present opportunities for naturopathic student interns to gain valuable experience in an acute-care environment and allow them to gain a deeper understanding of various medical specialties, which they otherwise would not experience in our outpatient UB campus clinics,” said Dr. David M. Brady, vice provost of the University of Bridgeport Health Sciences Division. At the same time, participation with naturopathic interns allows St. Vincent’s physicians and residents to gain an understanding and appreciation for complementary and integrative medicine. Such concurrent medical instruction is a practical way to promote and foster the truly integrated practice of naturopathic medical care.
UBCNM professors' research published
On the wider naturopathic scene, UBCNM’s Dr. Jody Noé recently authored an article to be published in December’s Integrative Cancer Therapies – "L-Glutamine Use in the Treatment and Prevention of Mucositis and Cachexia: A Naturopathic Perspective." ICT is the first journal to spearhead and focus on a new and growing movement in cancer treatment, a movement that emphasizes the scientific understanding of alternative medicine and its responsible integration with conventional health care. Contributing authors include leading oncologists, researchers, nurses and health care professionals.
The work of another UBCNM faculty member, Dr. Jared Skowron, will also be published this month. Fundamentals of Naturopathic Pediatrics, due out the second week in December, is a reference text for diagnostics and treatment of common pediatric conditions. The work will be a valuable tool for naturopathic practitioners, as it documents the scientific proof that natural remedies have been studied and are a safe and effective option when treating children.
When it comes to viable health care options, NDs play an increasingly important role in patients’ lives. UBCNM’s efforts are of vital importance as naturopathic medicine becomes more and more integrated into mainstream health care. Individuals like Drs. Noé and Skowron, and programs like that at St. Vincent’s, will help ensure naturopathic medicine’s place in a new era of health care.
Wishing you a healthful and happy autumn,
