UBCNM Grads and Students
are Serving the Underserved
Bringing naturopathic options to new populations
The University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine has a strong commitment to preparing students for working with underserved populations. The on-campus clinic, located in an economically distressed and high-needs area, and the school’s numerous satellite community clinics give students hands-on experience treating diverse populations, including patients with HIV/AIDS, the institutionalized elderly, Hispanic immigrants, patients battling substance abuse, and those with low incomes.
Many UBCNM graduates have built on their student experiences at these clinics and have become engaged in community efforts to reduce preventable disease and improve overall wellness and quality of life. Historically, naturopathic medicine has been primarily available to those in the middle and upper income ranges. But now, UBCNM’s doctors are working to bring naturopathic options to new populations, which will benefit greatly as a result.
- Dr. Emma Norton, class of 2003, supervises students in two UBCNM satellite clinics. Working with predominantly Spanish-speaking patients, Dr. Norton guides her student teams through the nuances of immigrant populations.
- Dr. Bob Scott, class of 2004, practices in Massachusetts, and also reaches out to teach nutrition to prison inmates in the Connecticut prison system. His work is made possible by a federal grant associated with Asnuntuck Community College of Enfield, Connecticut.
- Dr. Ani Hawkinson, class of 2007, has founded HeartSong Health in Community in Vermont. This nonprofit clinic promotes integral community health and offers a sliding fee scale and bartering in exchange for primary naturopathic medical services and education.
- Dr. Jaquel Patterson, class of 2008, works at Morris Heights Health Center (MHHC) in Bronx, NY, where she spearheads health initiatives pertaining to issues such as childhood obesity, senior wellness, employee wellness and improved patient care. Making a wide footprint, this federally qualified health center serves more than 48,000 residents per year with over 200,000 visits annually.
UBCNM is committed to bringing naturopathic health care to underserved populations and to supporting this mission with clinical training opportunities for its students. Learn more about the opportunities available at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine.
