AANMC 2-Minute E-News:
Naturopathic updates for the unnaturally busy student

NCNM Students Promote Naturopathic Medicine on National Stage

As always, the students at National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) are working to broaden horizons for current and future naturopathic doctors (NDs). In the past year, NCNM students have been exerting themselves both on and off campus. By collaborating with groups such as the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) and the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), NCNM students are making an impact on a national level.

Championing naturopathic medicine in D.C.

In May, a group of NCNM students were among those who traveled to Washington, D.C., with the AANP for the annual Federal Legislative Initiative (DC FLI). According to AANP executive director Karen Howard, this year’s DC FLI broke all the records: over 170 visits to congressional offices; 171 attendees, 100 of whom were ND students; and 1500 emails sent to members of Congress in a single day. Said Karen, “This year we focused on how Congress can address the critical shortage of primary care physicians by accessing naturopathic medicine. Our specific requests involved inclusion in all federal loan repayment programs and defining the term ‘integrative health care practitioner.’”

AMSA conference incorporates topic of naturopathic medicine

Mark Davis, third-year ND student at NCNM and president of the Student Alliance for Integrative Medicine, is also the naturopathic medicine interest group coordinator for AMSA. For the association's recent 60th annual convention, Mark arranged for NCNM faculty member Rich Barrett, ND, and noted homeopathy lecturer Dana Ullman, MPH, to speak on Evidence-Based Naturopathic and Homeopathic Medicine. The two presenters were able to address a large audience of medical students, further educating the larger medical community about the benefits of naturopathic medicine, and how it can and does work in concert with all other branches of medical science.

It’s great to see NDs and ND students taking the stage at public and high-profile venues like Capitol Hill and the AMSA conference. To hear more NDs and students speak about their careers and educations, attend AANMC’s annual Prospective Student Day! If you're considering a career in the expanding field of naturopathic medicine, then take the next step and visit us in Portland, Ore., next month. Find out more and sign up today.
