AANMC 2-Minute E-News:
Naturopathic updates for the unnaturally busy student
Bastyr University — Expanding Opportunities
Exciting news for aspiring naturopathic doctors (NDs) in California — your voices have been heard! In a news release last month, Bastyr University proudly announced its intention to establish a campus in the Golden State, where the school will offer its doctor of naturopathic medicine degree program. Meanwhile, back on the Kenmore, Wash., campus, Bastyr recently debuted two important additions: the Center for Student Research and the Bastyr Student Village.
Supply and demand
Over the last four years, the California naturopathic medical community has witnessed a 250-percent increase in the number of practicing NDs in the state. This statistic, as well as the constant queries received by the AANMC regarding accredited naturopathic medical education in California, makes it clear that Californians are more than ready for an AANMC-member school on their home turf. Although details are not yet available regarding location and schedule, Bastyr President Daniel K. Church, PhD, believes that "Bastyr University campus will benefit both the naturopathic medicine community and the health and well-being of the citizens of California."
Working with local NDs
In approaching this exciting venture, Bastyr is working closely with the California Naturopathic Doctors Association (CNDA). According to the agreement between the two organizations, Bastyr will provide curriculum and faculty, secure accreditation approvals from the Department of Education, and identify facility options for didactic, laboratory and clinical instruction. Simon Barker, ND and president of the CNDA, stated that the group "is excited to welcome Bastyr University to California. There is a big demand for both a naturopathic medical school and practicing naturopathic doctors in the state, and Bastyr's presence will go a long way to meeting these very important needs."
Back in the Pacific Northwest...
Even as it expands beyond Washington State, Bastyr continues to improve and develop its original campus. This fall, the school unveiled both the Center for Student Research and the Bastyr Student Village. The former, headed by Mark Martzen, PhD, will serve as a resource for students interested in research opportunities, while the latter will provide additional housing for 132 students in 11 LEED‑certified buildings designed to minimally impact the surrounding natural environment.
As always, Bastyr University is fulfilling its role as a strong advocate for the field of naturopathic medicine. Stay tuned for more details on the school's exciting developments!
