Editor’s Note – Naturopathic doctors serving diverse cultures
Whether they’re working at home or abroad, naturopathic doctors (NDs) often seem to find themselves with a very healthy habit of serving, and learning from, various cultures.
In this issue we profile just two of the many NDs who have made it their mission to serve two distinctly different patient populations. In creating these very demanding yet rewarding opportunities for themselves, both doctors have in turn created numerous opportunities for the communities they serve. To find out exactly who I’m talking about, read Meet two more of North America’s top NDs below.
And what about you? If you have the travel bug too, you’ll appreciate this next feature: We’ve caught up with doctors and students who are blending their desire to travel with their ability to practice medicine. Want to see the worlds they’re exploring? Read the Your Questions Answered column below.
Still, these people’s stories barely reveal one wedge of the grapefruit of possibility – globally and locally – for ND students and practicing doctors. So, name your passion, and set your course!
To your health and your future,
Coquina Deger

Naturopaths Going Global — First Stop, Nicaragua
Doctor Tabatha Parker, ND
Dr. Parker devotes her life and her career to serving the underserved population of a rural island in Nicaragua – but her hope is to reach out to the world and share naturopathic medicine with anyone, anywhere, who needs it. Her dedication to service started before she even graduated from National College of Naturopathic Medicine, and she encourages other students to dive in and actively experience the rewards of service too. Natural Healing Traditions, the Native American Culture
Doctor Andrew J. Kaufmann, ND
Dr. Kaufmann shares a common driving force with the aforementioned Dr. Parker. But rather than traveling overseas, he has opted to serve an underserved community here in the U.S. – the Native Americans. Dr Kaufmann has brought a naturopathic approach to diabetes treatment and prevention to the San Carlos Apache Tribe Reservation in Arizona. In the process, he and the tribal members have shared and merged some of their cultural traditions and beliefs. Read the interview >>

Your Questions Answered
Today's question:
International Travel Opportunities?
Q: I wonder about opportunities to use my education internationally. To take my abilities and training outside of the U.S. remains a goal of mine.
A: There are without a doubt many naturopathic students and practicing doctors who share your interest! I've heard of and met several NDs who have gone to work overseas. Sometimes it's for a brief educational or cultural experience. Other times it’s for a long-term lifestyle choice, stemming either from a desire to see the world (by staffing a cruise ship spa or clinic), or even more frequently, to help others (by offering their health care services to extremely impoverished communities or villages as Dr. Parker has).
Whatever the motivation or location, the experience of these physicians always becomes one that’s rich and colorful, rewarding, and mutually beneficial. To read a variety of real-world examples, both doctors and students, view the Your Questions Answered column >>

Naturopathic
doctors serving diverse cultures
"We're bringing health care — which is a right, a human right — to every person. And to be able to work in a setting where you can actually do that is so fulfilling. I can't imagine coming back to the United States and working in a clinic that wasn't for underserved populations. What I do is really, really fulfilling."
Tabatha Parker, ND
Medical Director
Natural Doctors International (NDI)
"Overall, Native Americans are highly receptive to Vis Medicatrix Naturae (the healing power of nature), which has started a dialogue on many occasions and earned that very critical aspect of any patient-doctor relationship: trust."
Andrew J. Kaufmann, ND
Medical Director
