Think Naturopathically – By AANMC President Paul Mittman, ND
A practicing naturopathic doctor and faculty member, Dr. Mittman is a true leader in the field of naturopathic medicine. He resonates both a strong passion for practicing medicine, and a deep compassion — as a doctor, as a teacher, and as a person. A speech he recently delivered to ND students extols the key philosophy of practicing naturopathic medicine. An excerpt:
"What distinguishes naturopathic medicine isn't so much the therapies that we use, but how we are trained and learn to think naturopathically. Thinking naturopathically means integrating the healing power of nature with a holistic understanding of each patient's condition to create a unique and powerful treatment program.
How we think, as naturopathic physicians, is of paramount importance, because it helps determine what we do. This is why naturopathic medicine is unique among the medical professions."
Dr. Mittman speaks and lectures to federal and state legislators, and to various medical and academic associations, continually expanding the public's awareness of naturopathy.
You can hear him speak at
Prospective Student Day next month, where he'll share his philosophy and his vision for the profession of naturopathic medicine. Read his bio >>

Your Questions Answered
Today's question:
What's my next course of action?
Q: I am interested in pursuing a degree in naturopathic medicine. I have taken home study courses for my own knowledge but am now ready to pursue a formal, accredited program.
As a massage therapist without a bachelor's degree, what course of action do you suggest? What should I get my undergraduate degree in, and from where ... does it matter?
A: Congratulations on taking the next step beyond your distance learning courses! To begin, I suggest you investigate more than one of the ND schools by visiting their campuses if possible. Another very convenient way to get a taste of all the schools is to visit our Prospective Student Day event this summer, or one of our Informational Forums in the fall, found in various cities across the U.S. Find event dates and locations.
Read the full answer to this question, which addresses choosing an undergraduate university and major, and the added benefit of already working in the natural health field as a massage therapist. Read Your Questions Answered >>
