Editor's Note: The growth of a profession
The field of naturopathic medicine has seen phenomenal growth over the past few decades. Not only is it growing in popularity and overall acceptance, but it is advancing in terms of both quality and availability of patient care. Additionally, higher standards for naturopathic medical education and clinical research are being set and maintained every year.
Over the last five years, American adults have been fairly steady in their use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). However according to a new government study, there has been a substantial increase in the use of some specific CAM therapies, including naturopathy, massage therapy and acupuncture. This increase has been attributed to both greater opportunity (more states now license these practices, creating a corresponding increase in licensed practitioners) and heightened awareness (due to the large number of CAM-related articles published by the general press). Source: HHS report "2007 Statistics on CAM Use in the US" released December 10, 2008.
This month we have the honor of speaking with two very prestigious naturopathic physicians. Both have played, and continue to play, influential roles in driving the growth and advancement of the naturopathic profession. Meet two of North America’s top NDs.
What else is being done today for the enhancement of the profession? We’ll address one reader’s question on that topic. Read the Your Questions Answered column.
