Editor's Note: Astound yourself
HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED WHAT YOU MIGHT DO IF YOU KNEW YOU COULDN’T FAIL? Fear of failure has been known to stop many people dead in their tracks on the way to success. In any area of life – be it the sciences, the arts, athletics, business, or even relationships – a fear of failure can be a self-fulfilling prophesy.
Then there are those people who never stop to fear failure, or even to consider it as a possibility. You’ve all seen – and maybe even been – that person at sometime in your lives. And you’ve all heard the classic story of Thomas Edison, my personal childhood hero, who failed more than 1,000 times while trying to create the light bulb. His “shining” perspective still illuminates me every time I hear it: "I have not failed 1,000 times. I have successfully discovered 1,000 ways to NOT make a light bulb."
With students returning to campuses everywhere this fall – not to mention the opening of the NFL season, the most fearless sport of all – this month’s e-news issue peers into the lives of two fearless ND students, who chose to take the leap to see exactly what they were capable of…
ND student Kathryn “Katy” Firisin is significantly expanding her career, renewing herself, healing others, and making her mortgage payments, all at the same time.
And ND student Ann Lee is discovering just how much she can take on – as it turns out, a whole lot: earning a dual degree in four years, and authoring a textbook along the way.
Here’s to Edison, to students Firisin and Lee, and to any of you who are willing to astound yourselves, and to let yourself do just what you are capable of doing!
To your health and your future,

Meet Two ND Students: Oh, the places they're going...
Ever wish you could talk to an ND student before enrolling in naturopathic medical school? Just to find out what it’s really like, what they spend their days doing, and how their expectations are being met?
Well, we did! We spoke with a couple of top ND students on their paths to success, and here’s what they told us…
- Expanding her career, renewing herself
ND Student Kathryn “Katy” Firisin
This SCNM student is following a path she feels born to take. For her, continuing her career as a physical therapist while going through naturopathic medical school is a natural step in the progression of her health care career. This literally hands-on experience often informs her curriculum and also helps her manage her financial obligations. Most importantly for Katy, seeing what she’s capable of is both an exhilarating and humbling experience. READ MORE >
- From pharmaceutical to neutraceutical
ND Student Ann Lee
The University of Bridgeport’s Ann Lee was on her way to a distinguished career in the allopathic pharmaceutical industry. But four years of working in Merck & Company’s supply chain was enough to change her mind about human-engineered medicines. To Lee, nature is the most effective — and efficient — healer of all. And her studies in epigenetics under Dr. Peter D’Adamo in Connecticut focus on creating treatments that last. Find out about Lee’s leap from the synthetic world to the natural one. READ MORE >

Your Questions Answered:
Job opportunities?
Q: Are new NDs graduating today finding job opportunities?
A: Naturopathic medicine is a growing field, and there are opportunities for NDs in a broad range of areas. Some NDs opt to complete residencies after graduation, while others go immediately into private practice. “If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally ASTOUND ourselves."
- Thomas Edison
“I wanted to provide them [my parents] with alternatives that would work and have fewer side effects. That was the major motivation that gave me the courage to make the change.”
- Ann Lee, ND student
“Working part-time while being a full-time student … keeps my mind active and open. For me, it’s important to continue being a physical therapist, because it’s something I love to do. I’m adding to my career, not changing it.”
- Katy Firisin, ND student
