Announcement from AANMC President

Paul Mittman(June 24 , 2006) - AANMC gains membership in the National Association of Advisors of the Health Professions (NAAHP), joining the 14 major health professions represented there. This marks an important step for naturopathic medical education and the growth of our profession.

The NAAHP promotes high standards for health professions advising at colleges and universities in the United States. Each year, tens of thousands of students work with NAAHP members who help them choose careers and apply to medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, veterinary and other “first professional” programs.

Our goal for the past five years has been to become members of the NAAHP’s Advisory Council, joining the 14 major health professions represented there. On June 24th we attained that goal when the NAAHP Board of Directors invited the AANMC and Naturopathic Medicine to join their Advisory Council.

It would be hard to overstate the importance of becoming full NAAHP members. From this point on, information on Naturopathic Medical education will be readily available to students at over 1200 colleges and universities. An NAAHP liaison assigned to the AANMC will work with us to fine tune our message and materials, and to streamline the admissions process. We will be able to inform thousands of advisors of the beauty of Naturopathic Medicine, the rigor of our training and the growing opportunities for our graduates.

Many thanks go to the AANMC Board and particularly to the Admissions and Marketing Committee – Melissa Winquist (Chair – SCNM), Ted Olson (Bastyr), Andrew McPheeters (NCNM)  – for laying the groundwork and building relationships with the NAAHP members since 2001. We are fortunate to be able to work with Susan Maxwell, NAAHP Executive Director, who provided support and wise council during this time.

This is a huge step forward for the Naturopathic Medical education and the growth of our profession. That’s a good thing, because millions of patients need our medicine.
